About Us
OUR PURPOSE: Loving God and Loving One Another
One of the few new commands that Jesus gave is found in John 13:34-35,
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (NIV)
Jesus intended that those who would later follow him would share their lives together in such a way that it would have an impact on others. He hoped that the depth and quality of their relationships would draw others into their community and ultimately into a close personal relationship with Him. In planting the Berwick Vineyard Church our primary purpose has been to plant a church in which people are strongly committed to this ideal. We hope to become a church in which people love God and love one another deeply.
OUR MISSION: A Church In The Market Place
In the Vineyard we understand that we are called to continue the works and ministry of Jesus throughout the world in order to extend his kingdom rule and reign.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’" (Matthew 28:18-20 NIV)
Our mission is to engage the world at every opportunity in a way that makes sense to those we encounter without compromising the message of the kingdom. By doing so we hope to bring God’s love and power into the hearts and lives of as many people as possible, helping them to become committed and mature followers of Jesus.
OUR METHOD: Building the People of God
It is one thing to have some idea of your purpose and your mission but it’s quite another to know how to achieve or fulfill them. As far as we can tell church is all about people. Church is not just about a building, it’s more than certain rituals or traditions and more than an institution. When we think about growing a church we are really looking at growing people.
“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Ephesians 4:11-16 NIV)
Here at Berwick Vineyard Church, we value very highly the development and growth of people. The maturity and health of the people who form a church community has a major impact on how fruitful that church will be. Our hope is that as we work with God to see people come into a personal relationship with Jesus, they will then go on to experience healing, receive training and spiritual growth. It is then that we will become the loving Christian community that God wants us to be, and become more effective in our mission.
